I’ve been a customer and fan of GORUCK since 2011, and the GR1 has been my go-to everyday carry ever since. Your bombproof everyday carry has been customized by me to also carry your Skateboard while moving through the airport, the train station, or some other pedestrian-riddled zone. Where 100% Independent Skateboarding, Special Forces, city streets, and the Skate Park meet is the GR1 Skate Ruck. Thank You, Roger, for this beautiful art that reminds me to be grateful and not waste a precious second of this life. For it to happen in collaboration with GORUCK is even more meaningful to me. As soon as I saw his soulful tattoo-influenced designs, I knew I wanted to somehow feature his art on a Street Plant Board. I discovered the art of Force Recon Marine, Air Force PJ, and Silver Star Recipient through being a fan, follower, and customer of GORUCK. This photo was taken by my mom on Christmas Morning, 1984. I stepped out into the autumn of 1984 steadfast and battle-ready with a soundtrack and a maxim: Rise Above! And later, when I saw the September 1984 “Street-Sequence” issue of skateboarding magazine Thrasher, my world went from sepia-tone to full-blown technicolor-I’d flown over the rainbow. After school, I followed them to Keith’s basement bedroom, where they proceeded to shear my hair off, school me on punk rock music and skateboarding, and make me a mixtape-the first song on it was “Rise Above”. Later that day, I met Keith Hartel and Don Bruno in the school hallways and was recruited into their crew of misfits.

I had left my home that morning wide-eyed, optimistic, and in search of transcendence. It was September 1984 and the first day of my freshman year of high school. The moment I heard the opening drum beat and distorted guitar chords of Black Flag’s “Rise Above” I knew I had picked up the trail to my own adventure.
